Family Adventures: Winter Wings

Big birds were on the minds of fifty kids and parents as they settled into their seats for a 2-hour bus ride from Neighborhood House to Sauk City on a mild Saturday in January. Binoculars in hand, they were bound for 28th Annual Eagle Days, where a full day of eagle watching and eagle festivities awaited.  Together with Neighborhood House Nature Educators Niki Espy and Christina Hill, they spotted eagles in the wild, and watched in wonder as rehabilitated raptors were released over the Wisconsin River.

The trip was part of Family Adventures – a monthly series of free Saturday nature outings for parents and kids – funded by Milwaukee Public School’s (MPS) Partnership for the Arts and Humanities. The outings are designed to get city kids and their parents outdoors and connected to the natural world in all seasons, both in and out of the city. The trips are completely free, and include hands-on learning activities and explorations that affirm the role of the parent as their child’s first teacher.

Now in its second year, the Family Adventures are getting more popular by the month. Families from Milwaukee’s Centro Hispano are among those making these monthly outings a regular part of their year. Those who attend four or more trips are eligible to participate in a family campout in June. Past adventures included hiking the dunes at Kohler Andrae State Park, and a fall hike at the Neighborhood House Nature Center in Dodge County. Winter birding is the theme of February’s  adventure, and maple sugaring is on tap for March.
